PROJECT REPORT

TOPIC CHOSEN: MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCIES. (STATISTICS)
CLASS: X
1.TITLE OF THE PROJECT: Health status of KV Kannur students in Upper Primary (Classes VI to VIII)
2. OBJECTIVES:
 1. To identify the underweight/overweight students in upper primary classes (Class VI to VIII) by comparing the findings with standard data.
2. Explore the possibility of research to find the reasons for undernourishment, if any, in the findings.
3. Examine the performance of undernourished students, if any, in academics.
3. PROJECT OUTLINE: The Class XA students are divided in to 12 subgroups. Each group has to collect the data (and share the collected data) of height/weight of girls and boys of classes VIABC, VIIABC and VIIIABC and perform the tasks entrusted to each group. The findings of each group will be consolidated and a final report will be presented for each class
4. PROJECT REPORT
1- DEFINE PHASE.
1)      Selection of Topic: The students of class 10 learn to calculate the measures of central tendencies in class 10 statistics. To connect the learning outcome to the practical life situation the project is planned as an activity for FA-4. The project is integrated with Science and English language and the computer science and technology with internet. T
2)      Outcome: It is expected that the students collect the relevant data from an available source and classify the data according to the need of the task assigned. They are instructed to calculate the mean, median and mode of a specific group for a specific data. Then they were asked to compare the data with the standard data available in the internet. They are expected to arrive at a definite conclusion of their task question?
3)      Scope: the scope of the project is multi-dimensional. At this dimension the students are asked to find out the mean, median and mode of the grouped data. Then the observed data is compared with the standard data and find out the underweight students of classes VIABC,VIIABC  and VIIIABC. The next dimension is to find out the reasons for under nourishment if any. Then the third dimensions is to find out if the health status of the students of VI,VII,VIII is directly connected with their academic performance. The fourth dimension is to check at teacher level to link the findings for planning the EQUIP programme of Upper primary students.
4)      Links to curricula: The topic is a direct application of the learning outcome of the chapter Measures of central tendencies of grouped data in Class Mathematics. It is integrated with health science by connecting with BMI chart which they learn in science and social science. It connected to information science and technology as the children are asked to collect the standard data from internet. It is connected to computer software as they are asked to prepare a height weight chart for comparison. They can download BMI calculator or prepare a Height Weight Chart in MS Excel.
5)      Strategy: A selected group of students work in groups. Collect data, share the data collected, help each other to complete the tasks thereby enhancing peer group learning to achieve the objective of the group which is labeled as Task group. The group work also intended to develop leadership qualities.
6)      Assessment Approach:
The assessment of the group work is planned based on the following tasks and materials prepared related to each
a)      Collection of data ( list of students with their height or weight as required in A-4 size paper- hand written.)
b)      Use of formula and calculation of mean, median and mode of the data specified for the group.
c)      Cumulative frequency curves drawn by the group.
d)      Use of internet for downloading standard data and preparing height weight chart.
e)      Comparing the observed data with the standard data and identifying the underweight, overweight and normal weight students of the target group.
f)       Preparing the project report in A-4 size paper sheets and making a booklet
g)      Presentation of findings





7)      Overview:
a)      The application the of formulas to calculate the mean, median and mode of the specified data and interpretation with understanding what these numbers actually mean

2-PLAN PHASE
The entire class comprising 57 students was divided into 12 small groups. Tasks are assigned to each group based on specific data. The data specified for each group is different and the task assigned for each group are the same. The expected date for completion of the project was fixed on 30th November 2016.

3-DO PHASE
The assigned tasks were performed by each group with respect to the specific data allotted to each group. A project report is prepared and submitted. The project report included the following items.

4)      Graph with Ogives
5)      BMI chart or Height-Weight Chart
6)      Calculation of mean, median and mode using formula and related table of values
7)      Outcomes or Findings of their group work
8)      Brief report of work done by the group
9)      Suggestions if any by the group
10)  Photos /ppts/paper cuttings/audio or visual aids to support the work.(not compulsory)
4-REVIEW PHASE
The progress of work done by the students was monitored and necessary help was provided to complete the project. In some cases difficulty in identification of students, absentees, difficulty in gathering data, calculating mean, median, mode, doubts in plotting graphs were reported. Suitable help were provided to overcome these difficulties. The reflection of the outcomes was also discussed.
5-MANAGE PHASE
The overall project work was closely monitored and the progress was assessed from time to time. The doubts of students were cleared. The weak students were encouraged to participate with students in completing the tasks. For this purpose a task sheet was prepared indicating the work allotted to each member of the group. The group members collectively consolidated their work and report was prepared and presented group wise.
6. OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT:
The students actively took part in the project and completed the tasks assigned to them. The summary of the findings of each group are tabulated and presented below. It was successfully completed though initially the children were not enthusiastic. When the findings of one group was discussed in the class they found something new in the study,all other groups were actively participated to complete the tasks before FA-3.However two groups could not complete the task in time. They were given extra time and students from other groups helped them to complete the project. It was a grant success.

7. INFERENCES
1. It is found that a large number of students in Upper primary classes are under nourished. It is closely related to their food habits.
2. The number of overweight students is less in number in class VI and Class VII. It is manageable level. 
3. The numbers of underweight students are more in class VIII.
8. SCOPE FOR FURTHER IMPLEMENTATION.
The findings indicate that irrespective of our belief that all students coming to KV are healthy ,the findings of the project reveals that it is not so. It may affect their academic performances also. So the academic achievements of these students are to be analysed. This gives a scope for further research in the continuing projects.
